Machining steel girders
Steel girders for a wide variety of metal constructions are generally prepared on special drilling / sawing systems for assembly. The clamping conditions on these machines are often insufficiently rigid and consequently place especially high demands on drilling tools. The tool geometry must be adapted to compensate for the non-rigid conditions and ensure a smooth drilling performance. Gühring’s HT 800 WP, a modular drill bit for hard materials, provides the perfect solution for machining steel girders; its good centering properties ensure that drilling runs smoothly.
The bit stands out for its split point angle. The 125° centre point makes penetration extremely precise, whilst also very smooth. The 160° point angle on the bit’s outer diameter minimises burring on breakthrough. The point is thinned in an ideal manner to ensure that, with the HT 800 WP insert, shavings are rolled up even during penetration. The shavings are thus very short, enabling them to be more easily evacuated. The concave main cutting edge with increased ground cutting edge honing means that the insert’s cutting edge is very stable. It is thus less prone to vibration and instability, making the cutting edge less susceptible to chipping.
Properties and versions
The newly developed HT 800 WP insert is available with diameters ranging from 12 to 40 millimetres. The insert is made of carbide DK460UF and coated with NanoFire. In the past, this combination has already proven a valuable means of machining steel materials.
